SUBMISSION AND ACCOUNT TYPES
Ecostamps offers writers two submission and account types.
BASIC SUBMISSIONS
  • Free!
  • Instantaneous and guaranteed delivery
  • Real-time status tracking
ENHANCED SUBMISSIONS
The same benefits as basic submissions plus:
  • Feedback directly from editors through Ecostamps Assessments
  • Priority review
  • Real-time editing
  • Enclosures such as cover letters, bios, and a list of writing credits
  • The opportunity to be awarded a Writer Fellowship for $2,500
Postage for enhanced submissions is $4, about the cost of paper, printing, envelopes, and postage for a submission delivered by the U.S. Postal Service and less than a half gallon of organic hemp milk or a half pound of shiitake mushrooms.
One dollar ($1) per enhanced submission goes directly to the market to create a pool of funds so the editors may pay authors for their work. Postage also provides direct financial support to literacy programs and scholarships for community writers workshops.
Bottom line: You're a writer and you (a) want editorial feedback, (b) recognize most editors are unpaid volunteers and want to support their work and the markets you hope to publish in, (c) would like to be paid when your work is accepted for publication, (d) want an opportunity to be awarded a Writer Fellowship for $2,500, and (e) want real-time editing and a faster turnaround on submissions, then you will LOVE enhanced submissions.
PREMIUM ECOSTAMPS ACCOUNTS
Premium accounts provide three primary benefits to writers:
  1. Enhanced Assessments
  2. Expanded MarketSource Listings
  3. Priority Review
Enhanced Assessments: Basic Assessments provide writers feedback on the relative strengths and weaknesses of a submission.
For example, an editor might evaluate the plot of a submission as an 8, on a scale of 1 to 10, but the dialogue as a 6, i.e., the dialogue was not quite up to the same standard as the plot.
Enhanced Assessments put an evaluation into context given the other submissions reviewed by the editor.
For example, an Enhanced Assessment will detail that only 27% of submissions received a 6 or higher for dialogue, or, conversely, that only 16% of submissions were evaluated at 6 or lower.
Basic Assessments help authors identify areas to work on to improve a submission. Enhanced Assessments provide context to help an author understand how the editor evaluated the author's work relative to the work of other authors who have submitted to the market.
Expanded MarketSource Listings: Want to know how many submissions are in the queue for a market? Average turnaround time for submissions? Percent of submissions accepted? How about the percent of basic submissions accepted vs. enhanced submissions? Or which markets value crisp dialogue most and which put the greatest emphasis on conflict, character development or plot?
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
A primary objective of Ecostamps is to provide authors (and editors) greater insight into the literary marketplace. The expanded MarketSource listings provide a snapshot of the literary marketplace today, but will also help to identify and track trends within and across markets over time.
Priority Review: Submissions in the queue for review are organized into 4 tiers:
  1. Enhanced submissions from writers with Premium accounts
  2. Enhanced submissions from writers with Basic accounts
  3. Basic submissions from writers with Premium accounts
  4. Basic submissions from writers with Basic accounts
Editors must review all submissions in a higher tier before reviewing submissions in a lower tier.
For example, if the queue consists of 10 enhanced submissions from writers with premium accounts (tier 1), 8 enhanced submissions from writers with basic accounts (tier 2), and 24 basic submissions from writers with basic accounts (tier 4), the 10 submissions in the first tier must be reviewed before the editor can access the submissions in the second tier or fourth tier.
Bottom line: If you want to know as much as possible about the markets you hope will publish your work, you want substantive feedbacks, and you prefer to expedite the review process, then a Premium account is for you.
The cost of a Premium account? Less than the cost of purchasing one box of Cheerios per month. To upgrade your account, log into the Writers Console and select "Premium Membership" under "Account" in the main menu.
